Do I Want What?

Something I never expected to hear when looking for a house or apartment; "Do you want the tiles?"

Pardon me? - the tiles?

Yes, in Dubai you have the option to "rent" the tiles along with your house or apartment. If you choose to rent the tiles - you can pay up to an extra $100/month. If you choose not to rent the tiles, then the landlord will rip them out and you will have to pay for retiling of the house. I'm told that retiling takes about $1200 to $1500.

Granted - not all landlords operate this way. In fact, it seems to be getting more and more rare. But what a waste - if you're going to be renting a place for more than one year, its actually more affordable to have the tiles torn out and then re-tile the place yourself - even if the tiles are perfect.

What a bizarre-to-us concept. But what a great example of the sorts of things you learn living in a place that you'd never hear otherwise. I wonder what the origins of this practice are.

I guess that's one way to keep the tile setters jobs going! I'm glad you're not expiring in the heat. I think I would not be able to handle it!

Ah ha! I knew I was leaving something off of my leases.

It was explained to me that this allows you to choose your own decor. The irony is that just about everyone choses 12 x 12 white tiles. And you do need to stick with tiles because the dust and sand would ruin any carpeting. And you also want to stick with white because any other color would continually look dusty. But it is a great example of how every thing here is "a la carte".
