Camping
We went camping this weekend. Dubai is pretty full of outdoorsey types. People really enjoy getting out into the desert. The camping season is quickly coming to an end and we hadn't yet been out this season. So, we took a one day trip up into the mountain areas of the east coast.
First we drove through some wadis (dry river beds) up into the mountains. At one point, we had some fancy maneouvering to get across some large boulders. All along the way, we had an eye out for a spot where we could get two tents set up without having to sleep on large rocks.
Basil always enjoys camping. He quickly settled into the only shade in our campsite and made himself at home sniffing the campsite for dried donkey dung that seemed to be everywhere.
After setting up camp, it was time for a quick rest in the shade before heading out for our "hike". The hike was really a short climb up to the nearest peak to see what we could see. Just like the bear.
I was remembering the first time that Lyra went camping. It was the summer after we came home with her. She was about 18 months old. I remember her little diapered bum toddling up and down the roads within the campsite. There was a swing set down at the end of the camp area and she spent many hours that trip being pushed on the swings by Grammy or Grumpy or Auntie Amy.
The view from the top was spectacular. It was a little hazy or else we'd be able to see 20km away to the Indian Ocean.

That Basil is quite the little trooper. It looks like a fun outing, especially if you love the desert. It looks like much of Southern California, where I grew up.

I hope I never have to get new hiking boots. The Salomons in the pics have seen me through the extremes of -30F on a snowmobile, through the muddy British countryside to deserts of the world. And they're waterproof too!
Yes, Basil is a goer. He had to trek up through the thorny bushes to get to the top of this hill.
Once when he was a puppy we went on a looooong walk and mid-way through it started to rain. We were walking in muck up to our shins. He kept trotting along. At one point had a limp, but we couldn't find anything on his muddy paws. When we got back to shower him off - found a thorn in his paw that he must have had for the last 2 miles of our hike.
Only time he complains is when he gets salt in his paws during the winter or when he steps on the broiling pavement here.
Wow! Great fun! We're going to the Utah desert for Spring Break!
Loving the Griffon!
That is just gorgeous landscape--nice to see those big smiles, too.
