Ok, this may sound like a really snobby post - I don' t mean it to. We're look at taking a week vacation in April and trying to decide between India and Africa. I'm looking for opinions on where you think we should go.
India
Pros
Very cheap
Close - 3 hour flight
Variety of tour (city, backwaters, wildlife sancturary, tea plantation)
Great food
Wildlife (monkeys, tropical birds, monkeys, elephants, monkeys, tigers (rare), and... umm.. oh yeah, monkeys)
Cons
HOT and humid in April
Crowded - it is Indian summer holidays
HOT
Africa
Pros
BIG Animals (Lions, Giraffes, Hippos, Rhinos, Elephants, Cheetahs, you name it)
Camping in the Wildlife Parks
Seasonal weather
Cons
Expensive - maybe more than 3x than India
Far away - 8-10 hours flight
What would you do?

Sorry, need more info...where in Africa, where in India.
In India, we're looking at visiting Kerala. It is a state on the southern tip of India. It is a beautiful, garden state in India. Their nickname is "God's Own Country" - which reminds me of people refering to Northern Wisconsin as "God's Country". This would not be a tour of the Taj Mahal or Hindu temples, but instead a visit to appreciate the natual beauty of the area.
In Africa, we're looking at Botswana. This is primarily because in East Africa it is the rainy season during April and there's a risk that with a lot of rain the animal parks would be closed. In order to get to Botswana, we would fly into Johannesburg (8 hours) have a lay over and then fly again into Botswana. Tanzania would be closer, but maybe a better time to visit would be in the fall or winter.

India!Wondering about DisneyWorld type places ... thinking of Lyra ... or is the closest near Paris? Not sure what your objective is in regards to a vacation.
We're really trying to focus on doing things while we're here that we can't do so easily from back home. Like a 3 hour flight to India. It's looking like we'll do India, even if it will be hot. We'll need to bring lots of mosquito spray and maybe even netting for our beds.

Africa!
I guess I'd go for India, b/c it's closer...you can always do Africa from the States (where it would be a little closer, and still as expensive).
But a happy dilemma to have--wherever you go, don't forget to pack the camera!

I'm leaning towared India.
Well I'm biased, but I am totally fascinated by India. Africa would be way cool too though -- so not a bad choice either way.
I guess it really depends on how much you want to spend - if it's not an issue than Africa would probably be pretty cool. But in favor of India, I have a friend who lives there and it is pretty facinating.
He wrote me from Kerela - was there for a couple of weeks. Referred to being in the backwaters and staying in a house on the Pookkaitha River at the junction of the Ambalphzha Canel and the Alappuzha/Allepey Kollam / Quillon Canal......if you can pronounce that, you should go! Anyway, he says it is a system of waterways and cocnut palm lined paths an rice fields. He spent is birthday on a houseboat made from an old rice barge. He added that no one speaks English - they have a 99% literacy rate and the all speak malayallum.
If it is very hot at that time of the year, you may consider going further north to Goa......Tom lived there, and says its beautiful but primitive. Area further south is like a Cancun for Europeans with lots of hotels and resorts. So that's all I know. Good luck with your decision!!
